In 2010 the Home Secretary commissioned research into the
leadership and training provided to the police service. The aim was
to consider proposals and recommendations that could form the
foundation for a leadership standard and governing body for police
training.
The report featured the work of Common Purpose, highlighting the
cross-sector benefits of our courses. The report states:
"A final element of the leadership model is the need to think
across the public and private sector. At every level in policing,
effective policing involves leading beyond authority and working
with partners to accomplish joint aims. This engages a different
set of skills in terms of influencing and negotiating and joint
problem solving and it seems to us that this strand of leadership
can only be developed by training and developing jointly with
leaders from other sectors. There are many good examples of this,
ranging from programmes run by Common Purpose and other
organisations within local communities that bring together middle
managers and senior leaders, to seek to solve common problems as
part of a development approach, to national programmes such as the
'Leading Powerful Partnerships' programme, which has been developed
as a cross-sectoral leadership programme."
